Grade Coaching Sessions

In 2024 we will be continuing with grade coaching sessions that are run prior to round 1. To ensure these are accessible they will be run over Zoom.  Sessions will incorporate the use of templates and videos and the motion for Round 1 will be announced at the Junior and Senior Open coaching sessions.

Request a Coach – Schools

This year, ASD will be offering a range of coaching services to students and teachers. Each session will be:

  • Taught by an accredited university-level debater that has had experience with ASD and/or competitive high-school debating
  • Interactive, involving a range of practice exercises and debates
  • Taught using detailed materials created specifically for the skill-level of your students, including recorded debates of regional level teams and resources used for the NZ world schools debating team
  • Hosted via Zoom, or at your school at a time that works for you

Available Options

  • One-off session
    1. Ideal for a quick introduction to debate for beginner students, or a good chance to build upon the key skills at a higher level for more experienced students as pre-tournament practice
    2. Duration: 2 hours
    3. Content Covered:
      1. How to effectively brainstorm and set-up a case
      2. How to construct detailed principle and practical substantive points
      3. Structuring rebuttal
      4. Meta-debate
      5. Debate Style
      6. 1 practice debate with detailed feedback  
  • Three sessions
  • 3 comprehensive lessons specifically structured to cover all the skills necessary in ASD debating at both a junior and advanced level.
    1. Duration: 2 hours per session
    2. Content Covered:
      1. Lesson 1:
        1. Effective brainstorming methods
        2. How to structure preparation time
        3. Having persuasive introductions
        4. Models and case-set up
      2. Lesson 2:
        1. How to approach principled arguments
        2. Constructing in-depth principle points
        3. Constructing in-depth practical points
      3. Lesson 3:
        1. How to structure and prioritise rebuttal
        2. Debate strategy and meta-debate
        3. Practice debate applying the skills from the previous three lessons
  • Team selection
  • We can come and help run team-selections for your school, as well as advise you on potential team combinations
    1. Duration: 3 hours
  • Long-term Coaching 
  • If you would like regular, long-term coaching during the debating season please get in touch with us to discuss a plan that works for your team!
    1. Duration: As decided, but typically consists of one 2 hour session per week
    2. Subject to available demand and coaching capacity

Request Private Coaching

This year, ASD will also be offering private coaching services to students (subject to availability). Coaching sessions will be taught by an accredited university-level debater that has had experience with ASD and/or competitive high-school debating.

The content of sessions will be flexible, depending on the needs and preferences of each student.

Lessons can be hosted via Zoom, or in-person at an agreed venue.
